The Lincoln Mustang Wrestling team finished the league season in Second Place and qualified two wrestlers for the State Championships. They tied the school’s highest ever place showing after finishing 7th the previous year. In 2019 the squad scored only 33 points and had an 0-6 dual record. None of the scored points returned this season but some wrestlers who were on a great squad two years ago came back out as well as some wrestlers who competed for part of last year returned this season along with the addition of some great novice wrestlers. The Mustangs were able to fill out a line-up and have a competitive season with improvement displayed each week.
Junior Ricky Nocon (120 lbs) and Senior Jacen Canales (128 lbs) both won the AAA after going undefeated in the dual season too and have qualified for the State Championships in Bakersfield. Also making the finals and finishing in second place was Seniors Nick Walker and Jose Perez while Freshman Deion Solis pinned his opponent in the semifinals to make it into the finals and finish as a runner-up.
Rounding out the placers were third-place winners Sebastian Souza (Sophomore), Jose De La Cruz-Torres (Senior), Emanuel Gonzalez (Senior), Daunte Love (Sophomore), Ramiro Morales (Sophomore) and finishing in 4th was Yusuf Abdolcader (Freshman).
Most of the tournament the Mustangs were bouncing around in the top 3 standings positions. After their two finalist champions, they took over first place with 9 matches to go. Unfortunately, the Mustangs stopped scoring points and Lowell went on a winning streak and locked up the title. Below are the final team standings.
Former Coach Shapiro did a great job establishing the Lincoln wrestling program and he was back to cheer on some of his past wrestlers. Thanks to Coach Shapiro and last year’s coach Adrian Torres for helping the new coaches transition into the school and having some wrestlers ready to compete.
