On Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019 The Lincoln Mustang Wrestling team kicked off the season on a positive note with the younger wrestlers all getting some great experience and four out of five getting their first victory. All the wrestlers walked out of the gym with confidence and a better understanding of the sport. Deion Solis, Joseph Riesing, William Kilpatrick all led the team as they won matches by pinning their opponents. Daunte Love won a match by injury forfiet and Mikael Bandaras wrestled some very physical matches with a lot of heart.
Their next competition will be on the 28th in Pinole and the team will have a few practices to make some adjustments to prepare for the bigger tournament. The Varsity and Girls team will also be competing in the same tournament. The Archbishop Riordan High School tournament that the team just competed was named the Anastasio Invitational #1 which in fun was named after Lincoln’s new head coach, Vittorio Anastasio, six years ago when he stepped down as coach to become a principal. Coach Anastasio designed the tournament format to be the opposite of the trend of going bigger at tournaments and instead he wanted to have small tournaments that started later and ended earlier to help give younger wrestlers experience without a marathon event. The squad will be attending the Anastasio #2 tournament in later January too.
